The Campaign Financing War 06.13.2014 : Why the Republicans will clobber the Democrats in the 42nd LD this fall.

42nd LD contributions to date: Democrats vs. Republicans reported as of 06.13.2014
After reading Riley's Sweeney post, I decided to dig into campaign financing for WA 42nd LD. The results show the Republican party outrageously 'out fundraising' the Democratic party. I am going to guess this is to be a state wide trend; but such analysis will have to come later.  For now, I conclude this:  If the Democrats want to take back the 42nd LD, they will need a steroid enhanced fund raising effort.  In the charts below, Democrats are blue, Republicans are red and the X axis label has contribution totals. Unlabeled Y Axis are dollars. Unlabeled X Axis are donors. All data is from the PDC. Technical piece is here.

Thus far, legislative candidates in the state of WA have reported raising over $8M. Right. Early June now.  Right.  All of the top ten fundraisers have over $100K in their war chests by now. Right. For WA state legislative seats. Right.  Well past time to get over ourselves as a small town rural state nobody is too interested in. The top ten legislative fundraisers as of 06.13.2014 :

Below are some Whatcom County (42nd LD) charts. Click to enlarge.  Coming in at 38th out of 294 legislative candidates, Doug Ericksen has raised $60K. His first time challenger Seth Fleetwood is in a respectable 84th place with $30K. Let's bank on this race approaching a combined $400K by November. If it does not, I predict Seth Fleetwood will lose.

Joy Monjure is a first time challenger against Vincent Buys. Currently, she has raised $920. Perhaps it is the effort that counts.  In any event, she should  be able to afford poster board and markers. Hopefully, the Democratic leaders who read that last comment have both a sense of humor and urgency.

Sidhu Satpal has two well funded challengers. This is an excellent  (Republican) strategy for the Whatcom Primary when the students and many others don't vote: Overfund two different primary candidates. The Republicans then have a chance (after placing 1st and 2nd in the primary) of claiming this seat in November without competition. Their continued spending in that race could only increase participation rates among the faithful in the other contests. Mr. Satpal, a respected local educational professional and businessman, doesn't appear to be without friends and admirers. He needs them to pony up now if they want to be able vote for him in November.

The barchart (lattice graphics) gives us all the cities that have contributed to the Democrats and Republicans in the 42nd LD by frequency. Fundraising outreach for the Democratic Party includes the San Juan Islands! Yea!! However, the Democrats will need to do just a little bit better than that to beat the Republicans shown far below.

Democrat fundraising for 42 LD Candidates by city as of 06.13.2014
Republican fundraising for 42 LD Candidates by city as of 06.13.2014
